Yale University supplemental essays

Every writing prompt on the Yale University application, with word limits. All of it taken from the application itself. 8 prompts.

  • Prompt 1Required

    Academic Interests

As of this moment, what academic areas seem to fit your interests or goals most comfortably? Please indicate up to three.

    How to approach it

This prompt wants the origin story and the proof, not your resume. Pick the moment the interest became yours. Show one or two things you did about it on your own. Let the school see how you think when nobody assigns the work.

  • Prompt 2Required400 words max

    An experience you bring

Reflect on an element of your personal experience that you feel will enrich your college. How has it shaped you?
  • Prompt 3Required200 words max

    An idea that excites

Tell us about a topic or idea that excites you and is related to one or more academic areas you selected above. Why are you drawn to it?

    How to approach it

This is a why-us prompt. The trap is describing the school back to itself. Rankings and a pretty campus read as filler. Name two or three things you’d actually use. A program, a professor’s work, an open curriculum. Then tie each one to something you’ve already done.

  • Prompt 4Required200 words max

    Teach, write, or create

If you could teach any college course, write a book, or create an original piece of art of any kind, what would it be?
  • Prompt 5Required200 words max

    Growing in college

What is one aspect of yourself that you hope to grow or develop during college?
  • Prompt 6Required200 words max

    Not in your application

What is something about you that is not included anywhere else in your application?
  • Prompt 7Required400 words max

    A meaningful disagreement

Reflect on a time you discussed an issue important to you with someone holding an opposing view. Why did you find the experience meaningful?
  • Prompt 8Required400 words max

    Your community

Reflect on your membership in a community to which you feel connected. Why is this community meaningful to you? You may define community however you like.

    How to approach it

Here, specific beats important. A small, true community described from the inside beats a broad label. Write it as someone who was there, not as an observer. End on what you carry into a campus, not on a moral.
